February 2011

People talking, people whining, e-mails maxed out, not to even begin to mention the tweets, texts, instant messages, blogs, on-line discussions (on just about every topic under the sun), and thousands of other NOISEmakers.  Not only does it make your personal life overwhelming, but from a business perspective, one of the greatest challenges this new ‘techno world’ is presenting to all of us is filtering out the irrelevant NOISE, and staying focused … on what’s truly important and where we must take action.

Just the other day, I read in USA Today that People are drowning in a deluge of data. Corporate users received about 110 messages a day in 2010. Twitter reports that there are 110 million tweets a day.  I was shocked to read that business productivity losses due to the "cost of unnecessary interruptions" hit $650 billion in 2007 (according to Researcher Basex) – imagine what that number will be in 2011!

Some interesting NOISE I came across was a LinkedIn discussion group, with more than 1200 discussions, on a one word definition of talent.  Everyone added thousands of words (from A to Z) – Ability, Blessing, Capacity, Developed, Energy, Future, Gift … Value, Wow, Xcellent, Yummy, and Zealous (you get it).  Interesting, my own one-word definitions didn’t appear … PEOPLE and GAMECHANGERS

PEOPLE hold the key to recovery -- they are our only true, sustainable game changers in the world of work. They produce results, they innovate, they discover, they create revenue and profits and yes, they have needs.

But they too make NOISE … sometimes in the form of WHINING.  Read the article below and see how you can take those whines and turn them into wins … not just for your people, but your organization as well.

As I continue to stay on top of the NOISE around workforce challenges (see related “nugget” links below), particularly as we struggle with post-recession recovery, one constant message is apparent:  PEOPLE -- We need them, we’ll find it harder to get them, engage them, and then keep them.  Let’s not allow all the NOISE in our day to take us away from what’s recovery dependent … PEOPLE.

Welcome to our second newsletter for 2011 … we call this one a NOISE flash in hopes that in a quick review, you’ll see a flash or two of some NOISE that helps you react and respond to your daily workforce challenges.

Talent Management Magazine, February 2011

“By learning to identify what’s beneath five common employee complaints, managers can turn whines into wins” … “What sounds like a whine … is actually an opportunity to understand employees’ grievances and their specific requests for change” … “Whining is an unattractive adult trait, but successful managers will use career development discussions with their employees to turn those classic whines into lasting wins.”

Post Recession Workforce Challenges: Bing it, Google it … Research abounds!

"Managing talent, leadership development, strategic workforce planning and employee engagement are the most critical topics around the world," according to The Boston Consulting Group (BSG) and the World Federation of People Management Associations. Many companies feel unprepared to meet these critical HR needs or to address the other workforce challenges that they will face in the post-recession environment.
“The best way to keep them (employees) from leaving is to prepare them to do just that,” came from a recent Wall Street Journal article. “In tough economic times like these, retention becomes less of a priority for many companies as they focus on more-immediate business concerns. But companies that neglect this issue during a downturn may be in for a nasty surprise as things start looking up…”
HR Directors who can identify key capabilities, attract and retain talent, and implement initiatives to drive engagement will be well placed to deliver an HR strategy that can support commercial success.

Corporate Leadership Council Research on Engaging Managers to Drive Employee Performance and Development, reported key findings:  “Economic volatility and ongoing uncertainty have created a tumultuous environment for organizations and their workforce. As a result, managers are experiencing not only broader responsibilities but also severe shortages of key capabilities and plummeting levels of discretionary effort and engagement on their teams.”  … “To ensure that managers achieve a greater return on the time they spend developing their employees, the best L&D functions move managers from focusing on a series of ‘check-the-box’ transactions to engaging in high-quality interactions with their employees.

Businesses must plan for post-recession growth and sustainability. If businesses want to be prepared for this inevitable post-recession time, we must go beyond current thinking about just cutting costs; implementing large-scale employee layoffs; and cancelling of employee benefit programs.
